Smoler, President: Nancy Smoler is a linguist and international consultant who has traveled extensively throughout the world and speaks six languages fluently. In founding Lexicomm in 1987, she pioneered techniques to vastly improve the quality of multilingual videos. She also addressed a pressing need for translations that used specialized terminology accurately and consistently across multiple media and projects. She has lectured extensively on global communications, translating for video, and terminology issues in commercial translation. She attended the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with degrees in linguistics and anthropology. Prior to founding Lexicomm, Ms. Smoler was an international management consultant to CIGNA Corporation, completing long-term assignments in Asia and Europe. She brings to Lexicomm clients more than 20 years of business experience informed by a love of language and culture. Natalie Knochenhauer, JD, Vice President Natalie Knochenhauer was born in London, England to a French mother and German father. Raised on both continents speaking three languages, her strong language skills have been particularly helpful in her work with the private and public sectors. After practicing law for 10 years, where she harnessed her commitment to and understanding of difference by focusing on civil rights, she went on to become an advocate for diversity. She has served as a top-level executive and also founded several non-profit organizations dedicating to promoting cross cultural understanding. In these positions, her primary role has been to communicate to, and on behalf of, individuals from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds and needs. A charismatic and passionate speaker, she has lectured extensively on diversity, tolerance, and multiculturalism. Ms. Knochenhauer brings her wide range of business and cultural experience and expertise to help Lexicomm clients meet their business challenges by bridging geographic, ideological, and cultural boundaries to enhance their relationships with employees, affiliates, business customers, and consumers. Chester Q. Qian, Director, Asian Languages and Typesetting: Chester Qian obtained his BA in English from Nankai University in Tianjin, People's Republic of China, and his PhD in Second Languages and Cultures Education from the University of Minnesota. He is fluent in English and several dialects of Chinese with a working knowledge of Korean, Japanese, and Russian. Mr. Qian has put his language and interpreting skills to work in a number of high-profile areas. In China, he published a set of 5 textbooks of English for science majors, chaired the subcommittee that designed the country's national syllabus of college English for liberal arts and social sciences majors, and was actively involved in the development of China's standardized test for English proficiency. He also established a masters program of English for Specific Purposes, the first of its kind in China. In the US, Mr. Qian's accomplishments are equally impressive. He taught various courses of College Writing for native speakers of English at the University of Minnesota for 6 years. His interest in the sciences and liberal arts has led to his translation of often-groundbreaking materials and documents in such diverse fields as pharmaceuticals, psychiatry, physics, chemistry, petroleum exploration, production and refining, offshore drilling, mechanical engineering and fine arts.
